The August issue of Carphone Worker – which most members should already have seen a copy of – focuses on the benefits to members of union learning. See the editorial below. It also contains an article on Charles Dunstone’s new Academy school in Preston, and the march in Wednesbury that was part of the union’s successful campaign for the reinstatement of the CWU rep at the Wednesbury site.
Editorial of Carphone Worker 4
Unions aren’t just about organising for better conditions at work—though that is important!
Unions are also about helping members get more out of life through education and training. This is called ‘union learning’.
Union learning is a tool for members of the Communication Workers Union to find courses that will work for them (generally for free). Examples of courses include:
- Qualifications for work—such as IT—that could take you to the next level.
- Courses for you and your family such as literacy, numeracy, and basic skills.
- Courses for fun: learn a new language, get the most out of your digital camera, or use a map and compass on the hills!
Many companies work with unions to help deliver union learning. Carphone isn’t one of them yet, but that doesn’t stop you joining the CWU, and making use of union learn!

Week of action begins! July 27, 2009Posted by tomcwu in Carphone Worker News Sheet, Shops, Union busting.
Up and down the country this week, members of the Communication Workers Union will be raising public awareness of the victimisation of two CWU members for speaking out at work, and standing up for fair treatment. The two members at the company’s Wednesbury logistics centre have been sacked for speaking out at work.
CWU members will be engaging with the public outside Carphone Warehouse stores, handing out leaflets. However, because we are a union for all workers, we are not asking the public to boycott the shops: sales staff in shops depend on the commision. CWU members will also be engaging with workers in the shops to explain what we are doing and why, and to give out the first edition of Carphone Shop Worker, a news sheet for staff in shops.
The CWU has been forced to take this action by the intransigence of local management in Wednesbury, and senior management at Group level, who refuse even to respond to our letters. For more information, contact Tom Dale on firstname.lastname@example.org or 07894 461713.

Local CWU members will be distributing the third issue of the union’s bulletin for Carphone Warehouse workers – Carphone Worker May ’09 (click the link to read as a PDF).
The aim is to alert workers to the existence of this site as a resource, as well as to make employees aware of some of their rights to be listened to. In particular, the CWU is worried that significant changes are taking place to the terms and conditions of many employees across the country without proper consultation. (more…)
